匹田先生（松重丰 饰）是年近50的作家，他所创作的作品在业内人气十足，本本畅销。匹田先生的妻子幸子（北川景子 饰）年纪要比匹田小20岁，即便如此，两人的生活步调依然非常的合拍，匹田先生成熟稳重，幸子温柔元气，两人是旁人眼中天设地造的伉俪。 刚开始，匹田先生和幸子说好了，两人不打算要小孩。但有一天，幸子露出了忧郁的眼神，说十分想要知道两人的孩子会是什么样子。为了满足妻子的愿望，匹田先生开始了漫长的求子路，在经历了接二连三的失败之后，匹田先生最终被医生告知，他的精子数量极为的稀少，基本上可以算是患上了不育症。
