很久很久以前，有一位落地的书生刘彦昌（郑佩佩 饰），功名失利的他本就落魄沮丧，独自行走在荒郊野外更是战战兢兢。张皇间他来到一间破庙，里面供奉的正是手持宝莲灯的三圣母。他在庙中对着神像一番言语，更斗胆在墙上提下五言绝句一首。这边厢刘彦昌进入梦乡，未曾想华山圣母（林黛 饰）显圣来到庙中。圣母赞赏刘彦昌的清秀容颜，看到墙上的诗歌后更动了凡心。几经考验和试炼，刘彦昌终于和三圣母结为夫妇。仙凡姻缘本成就了一段佳话，但是却触动了天庭的大忌。三圣母的哥哥二郎神领大兵压境，将三圣母锁在华山。数年后，刘彦昌的儿子沉香（林黛 饰）长大，他听说了母亲的故事后，上演了劈山救母的传奇…… 本片根据中国民间神话故事改编，同时也是著名影星林黛的遗作。
