1934年12月，中央红军长征途经通道境内时，曾召开一次生死攸关的重要会议，史称“通道会议”。中央军委按照通道会议的精神，放弃了北上湘西与红二、六军团会合的原定方针，改向敌人力量薄弱的贵州进军，使蒋介石在湘西消灭红军的企图破灭。通道会议在危急关头，挽救了党，挽救了红军，挽救了中国革命，为遵义会议的胜利召开，创造了关键性的前提条件。影片所描写的“通道会议”促进了红军战略方针的转变，从“通道会议”开始，毛泽东实事求是、一切从实际出发的核心思想逐渐为全党所接受。在建党90周年推出这一影片，具有深远的现实意义。
